What to do after being doxxed
A first-hour checklist for doxxing, from immediate safety and preserving evidence to platform reports and search removal.
Protect yourself first
If someone names a location, says they are coming there, or encourages others to approach you, get somewhere safe and contact local emergency services. Tell a trusted person what happened. If a home, school or workplace address is exposed, notify the people responsible for safety there if you can do so safely.
Preserve a small, useful record
Capture the exact post URL, date, account handle and a screenshot with the relevant context. Record threats separately from the post that exposed the information. Keep originals in a private folder and make a redacted copy for sharing. If recording the material would put you at risk, move on to reporting.
Report in the right order
- Report the original post to the platform, publisher or host. If you see mirrors, record their separate URLs.
- If a search result reveals the details, use the search engine’s personal information route in parallel.
- Check your email recovery settings, active sessions and location-sharing settings if the exposure suggests account access or live tracking.
